Newswise — "Specter's party switch is a further step to the extinction of the Republican Party in the Northeast. Republicans now have only 3 of 22 Senators in the region," said Donald Beachler, associate professor of politics at Ithaca College.

Known as the encyclopedia of Congress around the politics department, Beachler went on to say, "Specter's decision to become a Democrat represents a further polarization of the two parties because dissidents, generally moderates, can face electoral retribution in primary elections."

Dr. Beachler has written numerous papers and articles on Congress, elections, voter turnout and two books on presidential elections: "Winning the White House, 2008" and "Winning the White House, 2004." He also has numerous writings on the politics of race and the politics of genocide, asking why we ignore genocide, such as in Bangladesh? Beachler has also presented in Ireland on genocide scholarship and he received a grant to visit Jewish History and Holocaust related sites. He has served on numerous panels in Congress.
