Newswise — The U.S. Supreme Court's June 23 ruling in U.S. v. Texas dealt a blow to the Obama administration's executive orders on immigration.

Donathan Brown, an expert on immigration, race and public policy, says that the ruling will directly impact millions of undocumented immigrants and could reverberate through the presidential election this fall.

"The ruling, in response to the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents, or DAPA, not only places the lives of millions of undocumented immigrants in limbo, it too shows the legal and political vulnerabilities of an eight justice bench," said Brown. "With some lawmakers calling for immediate deportation, though with no articulated plan of action, others see a pathway to citizenship as the only feasible solution. If nothing else, this ruling secures only one thing: the rhetorical currency of immigration in the months ahead for both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton."

Brown is an assistant professor of communication studies at Ithaca College. He is the co-author of "When Race and Policy Collide: Contemporary Immigration Debates."
