SDSU's New Community Economic Development Program Offers Its First Seven Day Seminar

The first Community Economic Development (CED) National Institute will be offered March 21-28, 1997, at the Mission Valley Hilton Hotel in San Diego. The innovative one-week program is presented by San Diego State University's award-winning CED certificate program.

The CED Institute is tailored for people eager to make a valuable contribution in their community by helping it prosper economically. Participants gain skills in community leadership and economic development while gathering knowledge about the popular new field. No formal business administration background is required to attend, and it is a valuable resource for government and business employees, community-based organizations and volunteers who deal with community outreach.

San Diego City Councilwoman Judy McCarty praised the CED certificate program at San Diego State University (SDSU) saying, "This program gives people interested in community activism the tools needed to organize real and lasting change in their neighborhoods. I want to take the courses myself."

All seven classes and special topic seminars will be conducted at the hotel and participants are provided with all required printed materials. The day-long courses are taught by SDSU's College of Business Administration faculty and local business leaders with topics ranging from Small Business Development to Marketing Strategies. Plus, in-class discussions allow participants the chance to exchange ideas about issues that will help them in their professional and volunteer activities. There's also free time for special seminars or visiting San Diego's beautiful sites.

In 1996, SDSU's CED certificate program received the "In Honor of Excellence Award for Innovative Programming" from the University Continuing Education Association, and the International Learning Resources Network award in the "Community Service" category. CED students are enthusiastic about the challenge of working with professionals interested in gaining new skills, knowledge, and a support network necessary to make a positive impact within communities.

The CED National Institute program fee is $695 and is offered by SDSU's College of Business Administration through the College of Extended Studies. To register call (619) 594-6255 or fax (619) 594-6633. The registration deadline is Feb. 17, 1997. For hotel reservations call, (619) 543-9000 or (800) 733-2332.
