Newswise — Five ASRA members will be attending professional development courses tuition-free at the Harvard Macy Institute (HMI) after being selected through a competitive application process.
ASRA has offered the scholarships in support of its educational mission and commitment to faculty development. Applicants could choose from these programs:
- Leading Innovations in Health Care & Education
- Health Care Education 2.0: Transforming Your Teaching for the Digital Age
- Program for Educators in Health Professions
- A Systems Approach to Assessment in Health Professions Education
2019 Recipients:
Brian Allen, MD, assistant professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN, will be attending “A Systems Approach to Assessment in Health Professions Education.” He directs the acute pain service and the fellowship in regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine at Vanderbilt. His clinical focus is on regional and multimodal analgesia in enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways. His research interests include educational assessment, evaluating ERAS efficacy and compliance, and opioid minimization.
Melanie Donnelly, MPH, MD, associate professor and part of the acute pain service at the University of Colorado, will be attending “Leading Innovations in Health Care & Education.” Dr. Donnelly is was formerly at the University of Wisconsin where she practiced for 6 years as an active member of the resident teaching faculty, acute pain service and regional team.
Monica Harbell, MD, senior associate consultant in the department of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, AZ, will attend “Leading Innovations in Health Care & Education.” She is also an assistant professor of anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and an adjunct assistant professor in the department of anesthesia and perioperative care at the University of California, San Francisco.
Christina Le-Short, MD, is an assistant professor in the department of pain medicine, division of anesthesiology and critical care at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and the program director for the Pain Medicine Fellowship. She will attend “Program for Educators in Health Professions.”
Kristopher Schroeder, MD, who is an associate professor and director of regional anesthesia and acute pain management at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison, WI, will attend “Health Care Education 2.0: Transforming Your Teaching for the Digital Age.” His areas of research interest include perioperative acute pain management, regional anesthesia, airway management, thermoregulation and education.
Recipients will have their course tuition paid for (up to $6,000) and, upon completion, are required to provide a short report of what was learned and how this will practically benefit ASRA. Based on this, recipients will be considered to present what they learned and real-world applications at future ASRA meetings.
The Harvard Macy Institute was established in 1994 with a grant from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation. The Institute is a collaborative effort of Harvard Medical School, the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and Harvard Business School. Programs are designed to provide a collaborative environment with like-minded individuals to create a “collegial think tank atmosphere” and support personal and institutional growth.
Applicants must be ASRA members, and the ASRA Faculty Development Committee selects final recipients. The next scholarship period will open at the end of 2019.
