Newswise — NEW ORLEANS (April 29, 2013) — Gary Bloomgarden, MD, FAANS, FACS, will serve as the 2013-2014 Vice President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the organization announced during its 81st Annual Scientific Meeting, which is held April 27–May 1, 2013, in New Orleans. He will join President William T. Couldwell, MD, PhD, FAANS; President-Elect Robert E. Harbaugh, MD, FAANS; Treasurer Alex B. Valadka, MD, FAANS; Secretary Frederick A. Boop, MD, FAANS; and Immediate Past President Mitchel S. Berger, MD, FAANS, to complete the 2013-2014 AANS Executive Committee.

Dr. Bloomgarden, who recently concluded a three-year term on the AANS Board of Directors, is a partner at Connecticut Neuroscience, PC, in New Haven, and amid his primary areas of clinical and research interests are cranio-cervical disorders, abnormalities and surgery of the cervical and lumbar spine. He also serves as Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and Director of Spine Programs at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, CT. In addition to his service with the AANS, he has been active with the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies (CSNS), having served as its Secretary and Treasurer and later as its Chairman between the years of 2005 and 2009.

Board-certified by the American Board of Neurosurgeons (ABNS), Dr. Bloomgarden is a graduate of New York University Medical School in New York. He completed his residency training at Yale University Medical School in New Haven. Additionally, he holds a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of New Haven.
