Hie-Won Hann, M.D., Professor of Medicine at Jefferson Medical College has been the director of Liver Disease Prevention Center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital since 1988. A graduate of Seoul National University, she received a residency and oncology fellowship training at Harvard.
She began her work on HBV and Liver Cancer in 1971 at Fox Chase Cancer Center under the leadership of Dr. Baruch Blumberg, the 1976 Nobel Laureate for discovery of HBV and continued her study on HBV for 17 years until1988 when she was invited to Jefferson Medical College. Her current NIH funded research projects as a co-investigator include “early detection of drug resistance in the treatment of hepatitis B” and “Micro RNA and HBV related hepatocellular carcinoma”. Since 1996, she has conducted 25 clinical trials which studied lamivudine, adefovir, telbivudine, clevudine, lobucavir, entecavir and tenofovir. These are all anti-HBV drugs.
Her scientific publication includes a total of 283 articles and abstracts and 10 book chapters. Dr. Hann was a coauthor of the recently published "Asian American Guidelines for management of chronic hepatitis B."
Dr. Hann and her husband Dr. Richard Hann, an Immunologist, have screened >25,000 Asian Americans by visiting about nearly 600 Korean American churches and several Chinese American churches.
Since 1999, She has been an active speaker in the field of hepatitis B where she has shared her knowledge with healthcare leaders in the U.S. and Asian countries, including Korea, Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, China, Vietnam, Australia, Panama and multiple Korean American (and Chinese) churches across the United States. She also served on CDC Hepatitis B Advisory Group for Asian/Pacific Islander, Immunization Action coalition, Hepatitis B Foundation and National Asian Pacific Leadership Initiative on Cancer.
She has received 19 awards, including the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Hepatitis B Foundation, The Dream of Equality Award (Asian Americans for Equality), the Ham-Choon Medical Science Award (Seoul National University), the Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania Award from the Governor (Rendell) of Pennsylvania and the Korean American Pioneer Award.
