Newswise — San Francisco, CA – The International Anesthesia Research Society announces the availability of $600,000 in grant funding intended to support investigations that will further the understanding of clinical practice in anesthesiology and related sciences. Up to four research projects will be selected to receive up to $150,000 each, payable over two years. The grants are intended to help create future leaders and prepare applicants to apply for independent research funding. The application period for the IARS Mentored Research Award closes on February 8, 2014.

The IARS Mentored Research Awards (IMRA) are intended to support investigators who will further the understanding of clinical practice in anesthesiology and related sciences. Past award winners include Sinziana Avramescu, PhD, University of Toronto; Gerard Curley, PhD, MB, BCh, BAO, St Michael's Hospital, Toronto; and Aeyal Raz, MD, PhD, University of Wisconsin, Madison; Lin Zou MD, PhD, Massachusetts General Hospital.

Principal applicants should have yet to establish substantial independent research funding or be initiating a new area of research. Applications for the 2014 IMRA may be in any area of investigation (clinical, translational, basic science) and they must have ultimate relevance to the broad practice of anesthesiology and its subspecialties. Candidates should present a clear research plan, propose work that is pertinent to anesthesiology, and have both a senior mentor and an appointment in a successful Principal Investigator’s group. Applications will be reviewed on the basis of scientific merit, adequate preliminary data, career potential of the investigator, and importance of the investigation to the specialty of anesthesiology by the IARS Research Awards Committee.
