Newswise — ATLANTA—Dr. Jian-Dong Li, director of the Institute for Biomedical Sciences at Georgia State University and a Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar, has been appointed to the National Deafness and Other Communication Disorders Advisory Council.

The national appointment by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services lasts four years, from July 2014 to May 2018. The council will meet three times a year in Bethesda, Md.

The council has 12 appointed members who are selected from among the leading representatives of the health and scientific disciplines relevant to the areas of deafness and other communication disorders, as well as six members appointed from the public.

The council advises the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, director of the National Institutes of Health and director of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders on research and research training, health information dissemination and other programs related to disorders of hearing and other communication processes, including diseases affecting hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech and language.

Li earned his M.D. degree from Tsingtao University School of Medicine in China and his Ph.D. in biomedical sciences from the University of
California, San Francisco.

He is director of the newly founded Institute for Biomedical Sciences and is responsible for leading the effort to establish a premier multidisciplinary research and degree-granting institute at Georgia State. IBMS is dedicated to advancing fundamental innovative biomedical research that improves human health, as well as training future generations of biomedical scientists and health professionals.

Li joined Georgia State in 2011 as the founding director of the Center for Inflammation, Immunity and Infection. He is also a Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar in Inflammation & Immunity and professor of biomedical sciences.

Li’s research focuses on how inflammation is regulated in a number of diseases, including infectious diseases. He is also developing new anti-inflammatory therapeutic agents for treating inflammatory diseases. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health.
