College of Nursing, University of Arizona Nurse Receives Distinguished Researcher Award

Newswise — GLENVIEW, IL – Arizona nurse Ida Marie (Ki) Moore, R.N., D.N.S., F.A.A.N. received high honors at the 36th Annual Conference and Exhibit of the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON), held October 4-6, 2012, in Pittsburgh, PA.

The APHON Distinguished Researcher Award recognizes a nurse who has sustained a program of substantive research that has made a significant contribution to the scientific foundation for pediatric hematology/oncology nursing and advanced the care of children with cancer and/or hematological disorders and their families. Dr. Moore is affiliated with the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the University of Arizona and her research has focused on central nervous system toxicities in children with cancer. Dr. Moore was one of the first to identify central nervous system toxicities in children with cancer. This groundbreaking research provided new knowledge regarding cognitive changes that had previously received little attention and recognition. As a result of this new knowledge, there was an awareness and earlier surveillance for neurocognitive decline in children during cancer treatment. Because of her work, support and therapeutic interventions can be implemented for these children to enhance their academic success and ultimately their quality of life.

Dr. Moore has not only provided a great deal of new knowledge to the profession but has shared her knowledge and expertise with others, through her teaching and mentorship. She has also provided formal guidance through her work on editorial boards and scientific review boards, and informal guidance through her willingness to collaborate, discuss, and review others work. She has demonstrated the core purpose of APHON by supporting and advancing nurses with their practice which has optimized outcomes for children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer and should be recognized with the distinguished researcher award.

APHON, the professional organization for pediatric hematology/oncology nurses and other pediatric hematology/oncology healthcare professionals, is comprised of more than 3,400 members who share a vision for a future without cancer and blood diseases. Its members are dedicated to promoting optimal nursing care for children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer and blood disorders, and their families.
