David R. Just:“The new guidelines made fruits and vegetables available, which is a positive step. Now we need to work on getting the kids to eat them. Some very simple steps, such as giving the new foods attractive names, can get kids to not just take the fruits and veggies, but also to eat them.

“Without motivating the kids to eat, a lot of the fruits and vegetables will end up in the garbage rather than in their bellies. It doesn't add any nutrition unless they eat it.”

Brian Wansink:“Many of these complaints were directed to schools that did nothing other than changing food. The USDA has shown that making even small smarter lunchroom changes — such as moving fruit bowls and naming vegetables —tremendously increases how much kids take and eat.”
