Newswise — Hackensack Meridian Health Jersey Shore University Medical Center is now part of the prestigious CityDoctors Scholarship program that assists students who want to become medical doctors and work in hospitals that serve urban populations.
The scholarship program, administered through St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, will provide approximately $62,500 annually, for a total $250,000 over four years. Priority consideration will be given to residents of Monmouth and Ocean counties or those with an affiliation with Jersey Shore University Medical Center, and to those with documented financial need, or are veterans or members of a group that is under represented in medicine.
This new affiliation will expand academic programs at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and help address a growing shortage of primary care physicians, according to Kenneth N. Sable, M.D., MBA, FACEP, regional president, southern market, Hackensack Meridian Health.
“Training the next generation of doctors and other health care professionals is vital to providing a foundation for sound health in our community, and this affiliation will allow us to assist local area residents who want to become doctors,” says Dr. Sable. “We are very pleased to be among the few medical institutions chosen to be a part of this important program.”
Jersey Shore University Medical Center will have the option of awarding one scholarship for the full amount of the money (to cover four years of education), or partial scholarships for two or more students, beginning with the July 2019 starting class. Prospective students must apply first to St. George’s, which will then forward the applications to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for consideration. “This new scholarship program allows us to grow our academic programs and help area residents, perhaps even the children of our team members, pursue their dreams of becoming doctors,” says David Kountz, M.D., MBA, FACP, vice president for Academic Affairs at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and co-chief academic officer of Hackensack Meridian Health. “Although there is no commitment for these students to return to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for their residency, we are hopeful they will want to return ‘home’ when they complete their studies.”
St. George’s University School of Medicine is the oldest private medical school in the Caribbean and a top center of international education with students and faculty from 140 countries. Jersey Shore University Medical Center is a university-level affiliate of Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University, and is home to a state-of-the-art Clinical Research Center.
