Newswise — John Tracy Clinic (JTC) announced today preparations to launch a new Family Camp program tailored for families with children of all ages with hearing loss. The weekend program is slated for March 24 – 26, 2017, at Camp Hess Kramer in Malibu, California.

Online pre-registration is now available at www.jtc.org/jtc-family-camp/ for interested families as well as for people who would like to volunteer as youth camp counselors.

Throughout the JTC camp weekend, children ages 4 to 17 will be able to take part in a variety of age-appropriate camp activities. All activities are designed to build communication skills and friendships, enhance self-confidence and provide opportunities for fun, discovery and achievement. Activities range from hiking, rock climbing and arts and crafts to group sports games, science discovery workshops and self-expression/performance classes. An onsite nursery program will be available for infants and toddlers, ages 0 to 3.

While the children are supervised by their assigned youth counselors, parents will be able to take part in sessions and workshops to gain insights and resources on topics such as parenting skills, family communications, sibling relationship dynamics as well as some of the latest assistive listening and sensory device tools to help with their children’s independence. In addition, a variety of group family time activities and entertainment are offered to strengthen family ties.

Today, complex family dynamics that surround a hearing-impaired child’s development have few outlets for exploration. The weekend camp format offers time and opportunity to strengthen family bonds and meet other parents and children who share similar experiences. In doing so, the camp is designed to help dispel the isolation that pediatric deafness can impose on children and their parents.

Camp space is limited. Parents are encouraged to pre-register online as soon as possible to reserve space for their families. Visit www.jtc.org/jtc-family-camp/. For questions and more information, email [email protected] or call (213) 748-5481, ext. 323.
