Newswise — The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Pulitzer Center are co-hosting a free online event today, Thursday, October 14, at 1 p.m., EDT, with leading public health and communications experts to discuss ways to better reach vaccine-hesitant young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nearly 25 percent of young adults ages 18 to 25 remain hesitant about receiving a COVID-19 vaccination, according to a paper published this summer in the Journal of Adolescent Health. This leaves them at higher risk for severe disease and hospitalization. Conveying clear and accurate information about COVID vaccines is vital to get more young people vaccinated.
During the virtual event, journalists who worked on the CNN/BBC documentary Race for the Vaccine and public health experts will discuss communication opportunities for and shortcomings in addressing vaccine resistance among young adults.
The panelists will discuss:
- How public health officials can reach adolescents and young adults
- What messages on social media and other platforms resonate with this population
- How journalists can reach younger audiences
Speakers will also share examples of successful communication to young people through social media, news articles, and documentaries. A panel of Bloomberg School public health graduate students, with backgrounds in journalism or adolescent health, will lead the post-discussion Q&A.
