Roger Blumenthal, M.D., an expert on heart disease prevention, is available to comment on the new Prevention Guidelines being released this week by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology. The guidelines are embargoed until Nov. 12, 2013, at 4 p.m. East Coast time.

Dr. Blumenthal is the Kenneth Jay Pollin Professor of Cardiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the director of the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease. He serves as an American College of Cardiology representative on the National Program to Reduce Cardiovascular Risk. Dr. Blumenthal is also vice president of the American Society of Preventive Cardiology.

Dr. Blumenthal can speak about what will likely result from the new guidelines, such as whether more people will now be advised to take statin medications to lower their risk of plaque buildup in heart arteries that can lead to heart attack and stroke. He can also discuss what the guidelines mean for people of different races or ethnic groups and why stroke is now included in the guidelines for the first time.
