Newswise — Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, author and former lieutenant governor of Maryland, will deliver two free public lectures May 14 (Friday) at the University of North Texas, including the keynote address at the doctoral commencement ceremony.

Townsend, the eldest child of the late U.S. Sen. and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, will speak at:• The IMPACT Lecture Series at 1 p.m. May 14 (Friday) in the Golden Eagle Suite of the UNT University Union, one block west of Welch and West Prairie streets. She will discuss topics addressed in her book, "Failing America's Faithful: How Today's Churches Mixed God with Politics and Lost Their Way.” The event is sponsored by the UNT Toulouse School of Graduate Studies. Townsend is a senior advisor at an international investment firm. She also is a visiting fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and an adjunct professor at Georgetown University.

Before serving as lieutenant governor in Maryland, Townsend served as deputy assistant attorney general of the United States. As the founder and former director of the Maryland Student Service Alliance, she led the fight to make Maryland the first state to make service a graduation requirement. She also founded the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award. She has taught courses on foreign policy at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

An honors graduate of Harvard University, Townsend received her law degree from the University of New Mexico. She has received 12 honorary degrees and also is a member of the bar in Maryland, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Townsend’s address coincides with UNT’s spring commencement ceremonies. About 2,950 undergraduate students have applied for May graduation, in addition to 622 master's students and 76 doctoral students. The ceremony dedicated to master's degree recipients will take place at 4 p.m. May 14 (Friday) in the UNT Coliseum, located on the southeast corner of North Texas Boulevard and Highland Street. The doctoral ceremony will follow at 7 p.m. in the Murchison. Baccalaureate commencement ceremonies will be held at 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. May 15 (Saturday) in the UNT Coliseum.
