Newswise — Furman University will be the site of the 2010 Southern Regional Conference for Institutes for Learning in Retirement on July 21-23.

The keynote speaker will be Abigail Trafford, an author, columnist and former health editor at The Washington Post.

The conference is open to people either actively involved in or interested in starting a lifelong-learning institute. While it’s called a southern regional conference, participants from states other than the Carolinas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee and Virginia are welcome to attend.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Furman is host of the conference, with co-sponsors OLLI at Clemson University and The College for Seniors at the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement at the University of North Carolina-Asheville.

The theme of the conference is ENGAGE!

It is taken from Furman’s campus-wide approach to learning. Goals are for conference participants to explore new program opportunities; network with other Learning in Retirement institutes; grow programs that add value; address issues impacting their LIRs; generate ideas for the future; and expand their audience.

Among the workshop topics are “The Emerging Face of Retirement and Implications for Lifelong Learning Programs” and “Community Partnerships.”

Information on conference costs ($250 for those registering between June 1 and July 1 and requiring housing, $75 a day without housing), a registration form and the full schedule of workshops and events are available at www.furman.edu/olli/conference.
