Chicago (April 23, 2018) - Parents and others who care for children newly diagnosed with cancer must learn a wealth of new information to safely do so at home, and it is a core responsibility of pediatric oncology nurses to educate them, often based on practices that vary widely by institution. A new article in the Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing presents one standard checklist that nurses can use to ensure that information delivery is accurate and complete.

Chicago (August 1, 2016): APHON has earned both a 2016 ASAE Power of A Gold and Silver Award for its Pediatric Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Program. The objectives of the APHON Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Program are to establish education and practice standards for the administration of chemotherapy and biotherapy to children and adolescents and to promote consistent practices in the administration of chemotherapy and biotherapy to pediatric and adolescent oncology patients.

Chicago (July 25, 2016): APHON submitted comments to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) supporting regulations to allow Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) to practice to the full extent of their education, training, and certification. The pediatric hematology/oncology APRN’s scope of practice embraces the entire lifespan from infants to adults and the full trajectory from diagnosis to long-term survivorship/health surveillance of cancer or chronic blood disorders.

Chicago (Oct. 13, 2015) – The Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) has endorsed the Psychosocial Standards of Care for Children with Cancer and their families to be published in a 2015 special issue of Pediatric Blood and Cancer. The scientific, evidence-based psychosocial standards define a minimum level of care that all children with cancer and their families should receive. The Standards were developed following rigorous research and academic requirements and processes, and involved over 60 clinicians and researchers from the US, Canada and the Netherlands.

To kick off national pediatric cancer month and celebrate Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses Day, nurses from APHON, the Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurses, tied and wrapped trees in the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Healing Garden. The bows and wrap signify the connection between the nurses who care for the day-to-day needs of children with cancer and blood disorders and families, guiding them through the most difficult circumstances anyone can experience. The nurses wrapping the trees are part of nearly 900 APHON nurses who are gathering LA to kick off their 35th annual conference to learn about the latest in pediatric hematology/oncology nursing practice, build new skills, and connect with other nurses in the field.
