The mystery of why dystonia occurs, and what can prevent or treat it, has long puzzled doctors, who have struggled to help their suffering dystonia patients. Now, with support from The Bachmann-Strauss Foundation’s 2013 Impact Grant, new research from a University of Michigan Medical School team may finally open the door to answering those questions and developing new options for patients.

Gohei Nishikawa, a classical pianist who stopped performing for years due to dystonia, will perform a benefit concert with Nori Inoue, another pianist with dystonia, at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, April 26th at Diamond Hill Methodist Church in Cos Cob, Connecticut. Proceeds will go to The Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia and Parkinson Foundation

Gohei Nishikawa, a rising young classical pianist, was diagnosed with dystonia, a neurological movement disorder that causes painful and uncontrollable muscle spasms. He stopped performing and thought about ending his life, but then realized that he was better off trying to get better and helping others like himself. Although he still does not have the full use of his hands he has given comeback performances in New York, Rome, Vancouver and Tokyo.
