In this first-of-its-kind research project, Harrisburg University of Science and Technology partnered with The Bodhana Group to run an exploratory study on whether intentionally introduced cognitive behavioral therapy, delivered through the medium of Tabletop Role Playing Game (TTRPG) groups, could positively affect social skills, reduce anxiety symptoms and behaviors, and enhance the mental well-being of participants.

The “Exploratory study of physical activity programming for women experiencing homelessness” has found that participants of a four-week physical activity program reported a significant decrease in the number of mentally unhealthy days they experienced.
The study, “The Effect of an Overnight Summer Camp on the Quality of Life for Individuals Who Require Ventilatory Support,” appears in in the “Pediatric Physical Therapy” journal. The team, which included graduate students from LVC, has found that attending summer camp boosts the quality of life for children using ventilators. And the more years such children attend summer camp, the better their quality of life becomes, according to the study.
A team of Harrisburg University professors and students have set out to develop a smart disaster prediction and prevention system that could help save thousands of lives across the U.S. each year. According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, exposure to polluted air, water, and soil caused more than 9 million premature deaths in 2015 – three times more than malaria, AIDS and tuberculosis combined. Other pollution forms, such as noise and light pollution, can cause stress, anxiety, headaches, and sleep loss resulting in decreased productivity. These alarming statistics recently led a team at HU to begin work toward real solutions aimed at changing the troubling pollution picture. The team intends to develop a blueprint for cities to minimize waste sources in electricity, transportation, water, and more.

Three Harrisburg University professors have teamed with students to begin a study that examines addictive behavior in gaming. During a pilot study, the team will investigate brain activity to identify the characteristics of addictive behavior in gaming and eSports (competitive gaming).
In the study, the researchers measured unhappiness by the conditional probability of committing suicide within groups that are facing a higher unemployment rate and those that are not. Using individual-level US data from 1989 to 2004, their findings indicate that individuals have lower rates of suicide or are ‘happy’ when they live in a state that has lower unemployment rate.
