When University of Redlands Professor Renée Van Vechten offered to coordinate the second annual Western regional Pi Sigma Alpha conference, she had no inkling she would have to do so in the midst of a pandemic. But, with this year’s conference scheduled for March 20, the possibility of an in-person event began to wane as university campuses began to close and students began to attend class online. Instead of canceling or rescheduling the event, Van Vechten and U of R’s Pi Sigma Alpha students decided to host the conference virtually.

Test-Optional Admission Policy Introduced at University of Redlands

In a major update to its undergraduate admissions policy, the University of Redlands will shift to a test-optional admissions process, providing most applicants the choice of whether or not to submit SAT or ACT scores. The policy will go into effect this fall, for students entering college in the fall of 2021.

The University of Redlands, a private liberal arts university in Southern California, has received the 2018 Tree Campus USA recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to effective urban forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. The University has received the recognition each year since the national program launched in 2009 and is one of only two private universities in Southern California to earn the 2018 designation.

This Tree Has a Tale to Tell

On April 24, a group of students, faculty, and staff gathered on the ground floor of the Hunsaker Library for a ceremony to dedicate a new display. The exhibit showcases a large cross-section of an oak tree that stood watch over the University of Redlands Quad from 1925 to 2014. Professor Hillary Jenkins, who spearheaded the nearly four-year effort to preserve and date the slab, spoke at the event.
