Advanced Lung Cancer Screening Available at Atlantic Health System

The Atlantic Health System lung cancer test uses low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) that only takes a few minutes to complete and may identify lung cancer at earlier, more curable stages. When compared to chest X-rays used in early detection, the LDCT screening reduces lung cancer deaths in high-risk individuals by 20 percent. The screening test is covered by Medicare and most commercial insurance. Approximately 2% of screenings show early findings of lung cancer.

November is national Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month. This year alone, more than 56,000 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic tumors are particularly aggressive and hard to treat "due to a mutational profile that makes it resistant to therapies that work better for other tumor types," explains Angela Alistar, MD, medical director of GI oncology at Morristown Medical Center. Dr. Alistar, an internationally known expert on pancreatic cancer, is now enrolling patients in five clinical trials aimed at pancreatic cancer.

A select number of sites across the U.S. are involved in this study, which is done on an outpatient basis. The study is sponsored by Juno Therapeutics, Inc. The study’s principal investigator, Mohamad Cherry, MD, medical director of hematology for Atlantic Health System Cancer Care, is a nationally known expert at treating and researching blood-related cancers such as lymphoma, leukemia and myeloma. First Surgery with ROSA® Brain Robot in New Jersey Performed at Overlook Medical Center

The first surgery in New Jersey using the ROSA Brain robot was performed by Ronald Benitez, MD, chief of endovascular neurosurgery, Overlook Medical Center. Conventional brain surgery for epilepsy requires a craniotomy. Using ROSA Brain, surgeons make tiny holes in the skull through which they insert electrodes to record brain activity and help pinpoint exactly which part of the brain is responsible for seizures. The robot can also assist in deep brain stimulation, trans-nasal and ventricular endoscopy, and brain biopsies.

New Jersey Hospital Helps Pioneer Unique Personalized Immunotherapy for Metastatic Melanoma

Atlantic Melanoma Center is among the nation’s leading cancer programs participating in the clinical trials of a new type of personalized immunotherapy known as TIL (tumor infiltrating lymphocyte) therapy, in which the patient’s own immune system cells are removed from his/her tumor, treated with an immune booster and then infused back into the patient, along with a medication that stimulates the immune system. Iovance Biotherapeutics is developing TIL therapy for soild tumors and is currently conducting the pivotal study innovaTIL-01 in patients with metastatic melanoma. Atlantic Melanoma Center at Morristown Medical Center is the only site in New Jersey to treat patients with this unique experimental therapy.

Atlantic Health System Physicians Co-Author Studies to be Presented at American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting

Studies to be presented at the ASCO meeting are co-authored by research oncologists Eric Whitman, MD; Missak Haigentz, MD; and Angela Alistar, MD. Their ASCO studies include: two separate studies looking at TILS therapy and Keytruda for advanced melanoma; immunotherapy for metastatic head and neck cancer; treatment for recurrent Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive nasopharyngeal carcinoma; and a combination of CPI-613 -- a new type of medication, pioneered by Dr. Alistar, known as an altered energy metabolism drug -- with 5-FU in treating metastatic colorectal cancer.

Immunotherapy Clinical Trial Reveals Brain Tumor Shrinkage, Continues with Phase 3 Study

Following successful Phase 1 clinical trials, the Toca regimen – a new immunotherapy for patients with recurrent brain cancer – has advanced to a Phase 3 study, which is currently underway. The trial is being conducted at 68 sites across the United States, Canada, Israel and South Korea, including at Overlook Medical Center’s Gerald J. Glasser Brain Tumor Center, one of three clinical trial sites in New Jersey. In this surgical study, patients are randomized to either standard of care treatment or the Toca regimen. Enrollment is expected to complete in this trial by the end of 2018.

Simon Cancer Center is one of four sites in the country to begin a Phase III clinical trial of the novel drug VAL-083 for patients whose glioblastoma multiforme or gliosarcoma has progressed during or after treatment with the standard of care chemo-radiation therapy. Other study locations are: Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center; University of California, San Francisco; and Dent Neurosciences Research Center, Amherst, NY.
