He is the Baylor Scott & White Health’s sixth and newest facility dog, provided through a unique collaboration with not-for-profit Canine Companions®.
The cardiac surgery program at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple recently earned a distinguished three-star rating, which is the highest possible from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). The rating recognized high-quality patient care and outcomes in the most common heart operation: isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedures, also called bypass surgery. When arteries supplying blood to the heart are narrowed or blocked, the CABG procedure can improve blood flow. It is one of the most common and effective procedures to manage blockage of blood to the heart muscle, according to the American Heart Association.
Baylor Scott & White Glenda Tanner Vasicek Cancer Treatment Center (VCTC) – Temple opened a new radiation oncology facility that will benefit Central Texas cancer patients. Located on the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple campus, the two-story 27,800 square-foot facility is adjacent to the BSW VCTC and will allow patients to receive all cancer treatments in one location. The facility will be able to treat up to 70 patients per day and features advanced radiation treatment equipment.
While balancing the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic, the team at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple was able to successfully help nearly 200 patients receive a life-changing organ transplant last year. From January through December 2021, 191 abdominal transplant procedures were conducted, a new record for the hospital and a 25% increase from its previous record set in 2017.
The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) has accredited the adult echocardiography program at the Cardiovascular Institute, located at Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano. Founded in March 2020 and licensed by the Texas Workforce Commission Career Schools & Colleges program, the Cardiovascular Institute is the only accredited hospital-based school in Texas training students to become allied health professionals. The inaugural class of adult echocardiography students began the certificate-level, 52-week training program in September 2020 and completed it on Sept. 3. The program consists of didactic classroom, hands-on laboratory, and clinical externship experience with coursework designed to build upon previous classes. A new program track, cardiovascular perfusion, launched in September 2021, along with the next class of adult echocardiographers. The 12-month programs accept a limited number of students who must be at least 18 year

To offer transport to a high level of specialty care for expectant mothers and their babies, Baylor Scott & White Health has launched the system’s first Central Texas maternal transport team. Baylor Scott & White maternal nurses staff the team, which also includes pilots, paramedics and EMTs who will facilitate transfers of high-risk obstetrics patients via air and ground transfers from hospitals throughout the region. The maternal transport team began service May 17, transporting patients to and from facilities inside and outside of the Baylor Scott & White Health system.
The innovative virtual health pilot program is designed to facilitate care for elementary and middle school students by connecting the school nurse, the child's parent or guardian, and a Baylor Scott & White McLane Children's Medical Center provider via a video visit.
Baylor Scott & White Sports Therapy & Research at The Star in Frisco has published new findings from a study designed to determine the effects of wearing a cloth mask on sports performance. The data from this randomized controlled trial, conducted through Baylor Scott & White Research Institute, has been published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine and shows that participants who wore cloth masks during exercise experienced a reduction in performance as intensity levels increased.
In mid-October, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple conducted its 1000th holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), a minimally invasive procedure that can address benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH can prevent the bladder from emptying properly and could lead to kidney damage or failure. It also impacts quality of life in about one third of men older than 50 years old.

Earlier this month, Baylor Scott & White Research Institute enrolled the first four patients in the world on Gilead's new clinical trial involving an investigational inhaled solution of remdesivir (NCT04539262). This is Gilead's first trial in COVID-19 patients examining the safety and efficacy of an inhaled solution of the drug in an outpatient setting. The study of an inhaled solution asks whether this mode of delivery can help reduce the amount of virus from the airways earlier.

A study published today in The New England Journal of Medicine found that in patients seen for heartburn unresponsive to treatment with Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), an extensive, systematic workup revealed truly PPI-refractory and reflux-related heartburn in only a minority of cases. In other words, most patients with heartburn unrelieved by PPIs did not have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) causing the symptom. Furthermore, for the selected subgroup identified as having reflux-related, PPI-refractory heartburn, surgery that corrects reflux was significantly superior (67% success rate) to continued medical therapy (28% success rate).
