NIH Grant Funds Duquesne Research of Most Common Inherited Mental Disability

The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, an arm of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that includes Fragile X research as a priority, awarded a three-year grant of more than $394,000 to Dr. Rita Mihailescu, associate professor in Duquesne University’s chemistry and biochemistry department. Mihailescu and her team have been working to untangle the mechanism of the mysterious Fragile X Mental Retardation Protein (FMRP) for about nine years, striving to understand exactly how the protein exerts its regulator function.
