Newswise — September 26, 2016 (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada) – The quantum revolution is afoot. Physicists are learning to harness quantum phenomena with ever-greater precision, quantum computers are becoming a reality, and a number of quantum technologies are already in use. Such technological advancement poses an important question: how will the era of quantum technology affect our lives?

In a public lecture, quantum information scientist Michele Mosca will look at the quantum breakthroughs that promise to define the next generation of technological innovation. The talk, titled “As We Enter the New Quantum Era,” is part of the Perimeter Institute Public Lecture Series, supported by Presenting Sponsor BMO Financial Group. The lecture will be webcast live on the Perimeter Institute website and via partner organizations on Wednesday October 5 at 7 PM ET.

“Through ongoing advances in quantum information research, we are entering a new era of science and technology,” says Mosca. “The challenges are profound, while the possibilities seem limitless.”

A co-founder of the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo, and a founding member of Perimeter Institute, Mosca is an award-winning researcher specializing in quantum computation and cryptography. He is globally recognized for his efforts to help academia, industry, and government prepare their digital security for the quantum era, during which powerful quantum computers will pose a threat to current cryptography. Mosca also co-founded evolutionQ Inc. to help organizations evolve their quantum-vulnerable systems and practices to quantum-safe ones.

Following his talk, Mosca will answer questions from the online and in-house audience – including questions submitted prior to and during the talk via Facebook and Twitter (using the hashtag #piLIVE). Questions are welcomed from everyone – aspiring scientific explorers, school classes, physics and chemistry buffs, and general science enthusiasts.

ABOUT PERIMETER INSTITUTEPerimeter Institute is the world’s largest research hub devoted to theoretical physics. The independent Institute was founded in 1999 to foster breakthroughs in the fundamental understanding of our universe, from the smallest particles to the entire cosmos. Research at Perimeter is motivated by the understanding that fundamental science advances human knowledge and catalyzes innovation, and that today’s theoretical physics is tomorrow’s technology. Located in the Region of Waterloo, the not-for-profit Institute is a unique public-private endeavour, including the Governments of Ontario and Canada, that enables cutting-edge research, trains the next generation of scientific pioneers, and shares the power of physics through award-winning educational outreach and public engagement.
