Newswise — ROCHESTER, Minn. — The Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees elected Amy W. Williams, M.D., as an internal trustee at its quarterly meeting on Friday, Aug. 9.

"Dr. Williams is a highly accomplished leader and physician," says Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., Mayo Clinic's president and CEO. "Her leadership responsibilities inside and outside of Mayo Clinic, commitment to our values, and focus on building teams to serve the needs of our patients, will further strengthen the Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees."

Dr. Williams is chair of the Department of Medicine; professor of medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science; and faculty in the Division of Hypertension and Nephrology. She succeeds Heidi Nelson, M.D., who retired in June.

Dr. Williams joined Mayo Clinic in 1990. She has held numerous leadership positions, including president of the Rochester staff, Officers and Councilors, while maintaining significant inpatient and outpatient clinical duties. She's a member of the Executive Operations Team, the Center for Regenerative Medicine Executive Committee and a leadership team facilitating Mayo Clinic’s 2030 strategic plan. Dr. Williams also is medical director of the Eisenberg Dialysis Unit and the Rochester Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant Executive Committee.

Previously, Dr. Williams was medical director of hospital operations for Mayo Clinic Hospital — Rochester; chair, Hospital Practice Subcommittee; and co-chair, Mayo Clinic Midwest Hospital Executive Group. She received the Doctor's Mayo Society Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 for her contributions to improving the care of patients, enhancing the practice, and championing the career development of all physician staff.

Externally, Dr. Williams serves on the board of directors of the American Board of Internal Medicine. She also participates in an Association of Professors of Medicine's initiative to address sexual harassment in medicine.

The Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees, a 31-member group of public representatives and Mayo Clinic physicians and administrators, is responsible for patient care, medical education and research at Mayo Clinic locations in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota, as well as across Mayo Clinic Health System, a network of clinics and hospitals serving more than 60 communities in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
