UNC researchers designed a mutation (red) in the gene that encodes the histone protein, around which are wrapped two strands of DNA. In fruit flies, the mutation makes it impossible for an enzyme to modify this new designer gene. It’s a new way to study how genes are regulated in an organism much more complex than yeast.
