Funding to GCOOS from the U.S. IOOS supports the operation of buoys outfitted with special ocean sensors in the Gulf. This buoy, located in the Mississippi Bight, is operated by CenGOOS.
Funding to GCOOS from the U.S. IOOS supports the operation of high-frequency radar stations. GCOOS is seeking additional funding to further expand HFR coverage in the Gulf of Mexico as part of the organization's Build Out Plan.
GCOOS funding also supports outreach and education -- like an article in a recent issue of Ranger Rick magazine -- to help increase ocean literacy among Gulf residents.
