Microscopic images compare the wall of the small intestine after mice were fed food, liquid diet (enteral nutrition), or liquid diet supplemented with tannin. Adding tannins to enteral nutrition counteracts the negative effects of enteral nutrition alone on density and size of the goblet cells that line the small intestine and absorb nutrients from food passing through. Tannin also improves the function of the gut barrier, an immune defense against infection.
