To mimic the shock waves in a supernova remnant, SLAC researchers and their colleagues fired powerful lasers at the National Ignition Facility at two carbon targets, sending two plasma flows into each other. Where they met, the plasmas formed shock waves similar to what's seen in astrophysical shocks.
