Doctoral student Jyotshna Pokharel of Kathmandu, Nepal, assembles a lithium-ion battery in which lithium metal is used in place of graphite as the anode material. The research is part of three-year, nearly $450,000 National Science Foundation project, led by assistant professor Yue Zhou of the Department of South Dakota State University’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, to determine how lithium metal improves battery performance.
