High-throughput virtual screening followed by an activity inhibition screen identified a small molecule (ring and stick figure) that binds to and inhibits Mpro—an enzyme essential to the replication of the virus that causes COVID-19 (colorful background ribbon diagram). The discovery offers a springboard for developing the molecule into a drug to fight COVID-19.
