Engler chairs the Michigan Community Service Commission, which enables state residents to engage in public problem solving through service and volunteerism. In 1997, she was appointed by retired Gen. Colin Powell to serve on the board of America's Promise -- The Alliance for Youth. She is also a member of the board of directors of the Points of Light Foundation in Washington, D.C., and the Michigan Nonprofit Association.

Engler is the first of Michigan's First Ladies to be a lawyer. She is a member of the Bar Associations in Michigan and Texas, her native state. She is on leave from a Grand Rapids law firm to raise her triplet daughters, who were born in 1994. Engler was honored a year later with the Mother of Young Children Award by the Michigan Chapter of the American Mothers Organization.

A vocal advocate for women, she runs in Detroit's Race for the Cure, and has received the Award for Leadership from the Karmanos Cancer Institute for her work promoting breast cancer awareness.

Engler is also a recipient of the Northwood Distinguished Women's Award for "outstanding leadership and achievement."

NMU's commencement ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Superior Dome. It will also be broadcast live on WNMU-TV 13.
