Newswise — T. Nicolaus Tideman, professor of economics at Virginia Tech, proposes that the economy be restored by lending every taxpayer $5,000 until the crisis passes, so that people will be willing to spend the amounts of money that they usually spend, instead of setting aside extra funds for emergencies caused by the crisis and thereby keeping the economy below its potential.

Dr. Tideman is available to respond to media queries until Dec. 29 then returns Jan. 8. He specializes in economic justice, efficient taxation, voting rules, proportional representation, and money and banking reform.

He is author of the book, "Collective Decisions and Voting: The Potential for Public Choice," Ashgate Publishing, 2006.

He has been with Virginia Tech since 1974 and a full professor since 1985. He received a PhD from University of Chicago in economics.
