Mount Sinai Cardiologists Recognized with Top Honors at American College of Cardiology 68th Annual Scientific Session
(New York, NY– March 14, 2019) – Three of Mount Sinai’s top cardiologists will be recognized for their achievements at the 2019 American College of Cardiology Conference in New Orleans.
George Dangas, MD, PhD, Professor of Cardiology and Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Director of The Zena and Michael A. Wiener Cardiovascular Institute at The Mount Sinai Hospital, will receive the 2019 Distinguished Fellowship Award for his outstanding contributions to the field of cardiovascular medicine. The College will present 19 of these awards at the Inauguration and Awards Ceremony on Monday, March 18.
Additionally, Robert Rosenson, MD, Professor of Cardiology and Director of Cardiometabolic Disorders at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, will be honored with the 2019 Simon Dack Award for outstanding scholarship. William Whang, MD, Associate Professor of Cardiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai will also receive this distinction from the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC). JACC recognizes the contributions and accomplishments of outstanding peer reviewers who assist the journal in its mission of publishing important new clinical information. Six recipients will receive this award during the JACC Editorial Board Meeting held in conjunction with the conference.
Dr. Dangas is an internationally recognized expert in coronary, heart valve, and vascular disease and specializes in minimally invasive interventional treatments with cutting-edge technologies in combination with novel medical therapy approaches. His active research interests include cardiovascular device therapy and its combination with anticlotting medications. He has authored more than 500 publications, including an international referral textbook on Interventional Cardiology Principles and Practice, and is the Associate Editor of the leading cardiology specialty journal, Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC). Additionally, he is a course director and invited/featured speaker in many of the top ranked cardiovascular conferences in the United States and around the world. Dr. Dangas has received Fellowship distinction in seven national and international professional societies and was a Trustee of the American College of Cardiology and of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions. He has received teaching awards since early in his career and is the American College of Cardiology Distinguished Teacher 2017.
Dr. Rosenson has received the Simon Dack Award for outstanding scholarship for four consecutive years. He is an internationally recognized researcher with ongoing research interests involving the effects of novel lipid-lowering therapy, inflammation, thrombogenesis, and rheology. His more recent interests extend to selective inhibitors of inflammatory pathways. He has authored more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals. In addition, he has written 700 book chapters and abstracts, as well as electronic publications for UpToDate Medicine (one of the most widely used medical resources in the world that gives point of care information for clinicians). Dr Rosenson is co-Editor in Chief for Cardiovascular Drugs and Therapy, Section Editor on Metabolic Disorders for JACC, and Section Editor on Lipid Disorders for UptoDate. Dr. Rosenson is a Fellow of the American Heart Association (AHA) Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, and the AHA Council on Epidemiology and Prevention. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and American College of Physicians. Dr. Rosenson has long been an active member of the National Lipid Association and has served on its board of directors, program development committee, and expert panels. He has served as Principal Investigator (PI) on a number of studies funded by the National Institutes of Health, pharmaceutical-sponsored drug trials, and multicenter studies, and was Global PI of the PLASMA I, PLASMA II, and FRANCIS trials.
Dr. Whang is Director of Clinical Electrophysiology Research at The Mount Sinai Hospital and has active research interests in catheter ablation and new device technologies for patients with cardiac arrhythmia. He has published 88 manuscripts in journals including Circulation, JAMA, and JACC, as well as chapters in major cardiology textbooks including Hurst’s The Heart. He is a Fellow of the American Heart Association, the Heart Rhythm Society, and the New York Academy of Medicine. Previous research funding has included a career development award from the American Heart Association, the Lewis Katz research award for junior faculty at Columbia University, and an R01 grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. He is a practicing cardiac electrophysiologist who specializes in catheter ablation procedures and implantation of pacemakers/defibrillators and left atrial appendage closure devices.
