Newswise — The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) has elected Yvette Calderon, MD, Chair of Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, to its Board of Directors.

“I am humbled and honored to serve on the Board of Directors for ABEM," says Dr. Calderon. "I look forward to contributing to the mission of ABEM, which ensures the highest standards in the specialty of emergency medicine. ABEM has consistently worked to create a well-designed method of certifying our physicians who have demonstrated special knowledge and skills in emergency medicine and its subspecialties, and to improve the quality of emergency medical care for all patients."

“Yvette Calderon is an inspirational leader and role model; she has made impressive contributions during her career and is well prepared to serve the academic, clinical, and research missions of emergency medicine by serving on the ABEM board,” says Andy Jagoda, MD, Chair of Emergency Medicine for the Mount Sinai Health System.

Over the course of her career in emergency medicine, Dr. Calderon has focused her research on HIV counseling, testing, and prevention. She was instrumental in developing Project BRIEF, a community-based program in the Bronx that has tested more than 100,000 patients for HIV. She received a K23 award from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to continue conducting HIV prevention studies that engage adolescents and young adults. Dr. Calderon has received more than $5 million in research funding and has more than 100 abstracts and publications. She completed her emergency medicine residency at the Jacobi Medical Center and received her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Calderon will begin her term as an ABEM director at the close of the summer board meeting. ABEM Board of Directors members are volunteer, board certified, clinically active emergency physicians who are actively participating in ABEM Maintenance of Certification, a program of continuous learning and periodic assessment.
