WhatNewswise — National Cancer Institute Acting Director Douglas R. Lowy, MD, will visit the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center April 8, 2016. Cheryl Willman, MD, the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Director and CEO, will join him in meetings with several other top officials in the state, at the university, and at the UNM Cancer Center’s research consortium partners.
WhyThe UNM Cancer Center was awarded NCI Comprehensive designation in 2015. It is one of the most recently-named NCI-designated Comprehensive cancer centers in the country. Only 45 cancer centers in the United States hold Comprehensive designation. The UNM Cancer Center is the only cancer center in New Mexico to hold this Comprehensive designation and is now only one of 45 Cancer Centers in the nation (in the top 3 percent) to hold this elite honor and designation. Lowy will learn about the unique cancer challenges and opportunities in New Mexico. New Mexico has the fifth largest land mass of the 50 states, ranks 36th in population, and has a unique mix of races and cultures. Lowy will also review the UNM Cancer Center’s basic and clinical research programs. UNM Cancer Center scientists work with scientists at Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratories and Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute. UNM Cancer Center doctors work with doctors in hospitals and medical groups throughout the state to bring cancer clinical trials to all New Mexicans.
WhoDouglas R. Lowy, MD, was officially named the NCI’s Acting Director in April 2015. Prior to his appointment, Lowy served as NCI’s deputy director from July 2010 helping lead NCI’s key scientific initiatives. About the UNM Comprehensive Cancer CenterThe University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 400-mile radius.
