Newswise — Boston, Mass. – New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH) has received five-out-of-five stars from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in its annual quality and safety assessment of more than 4,500 hospitals across the country. The Overall Hospital Quality Star rating was awarded to only 13.5 percent of 4,586 hospitals in the United States.
“To earn the highest star quality rating from the CMS is not only an honor, but also a testament to our staff’s commitment to our patients,” said David Passafaro, president of NEBH. “This year was a difficult one as we fought against the COVID-19 pandemic, but it didn’t stop our employees from delivering top-notch care and service in a safe environment for our patients and their families – and for that, I am very proud.”
The Overall Hospital Quality Star rating summarizes a variety of measures across five areas of quality into a single star rating for each hospital. Once reporting thresholds are met, a hospital’s overall star rating is calculated using only those measures for which data are available, with the average being about 37 measures. This year, the CMS established a new 2021 methodology in five measure groups: Mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience and timely and effective care. This data, found under the CMS’ Hospital Compare tool, is available for consumers to help them compare performance measure information and make informed decisions about where to go for health care.
