Notre Dame Professor Susan Blum, author of I Love Learning; I Hate School: An Anthropology of College, is a leader in unconventional classroom instruction. Through rigorous research and implementation in her own classes, she's restructured the typical assignment/grades paradigm.
Blum encourages students to try new forms of presenting what they learn — including blog posts, podcasts, infographics, movies, and photo essays. Each piece includes a self-assessment, where students are asked to reflect critically on the strengths and weaknesses of their work.
"The more learning in school resembles the successful learning that is so abundant outside school, the greater the chance that some learning will take place," she writes in the book.
Susan is an excellent source on alternative learning methods as more and more universities go online during the coronavirus outbreak. You can reach her via email at [email protected].
