Newswise — The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) will present Rose Sherman, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, CNL, FAAN, with its AACN Pioneering Spirit Award.
This AACN Visionary Leadership Award recognizes significant contributions that influence acute and critical care nursing and relate to the association’s mission, vision and values. The official presentation is scheduled to take place during the 2021 National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition (NTI), due to the COVID-19-related cancellation of NTI 2020.
Sherman is a healthcare leadership expert who has dedicated much of her career to the development and advancement of nurse leaders.
“Dr. Sherman was an early proponent for nurses to have leadership roles throughout healthcare organizations,” said AACN board president Megan Brunson. “She stressed the importance of mentoring and developing nurse leaders at the unit level, including charge nurses and nurse managers, long before this idea became widespread.”
Sherman is professor emerita of the Nursing Leadership Institute in the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), where she taught for 17 years and served as the graduate program director for nursing administration. Prior to joining the faculty at FAU, Sherman enjoyed a 25-year nursing leadership career with the Department of Veterans Affairs. During her career, she has been the principal investigator for more than $2.5 million in nursing leadership education and research grants.
This year, Sherman is serving as the nurse leader coach in residence at ChristianaCare in Newark, Delaware, as part of an innovative program designed to strengthen staff leadership skills and hardwire a coaching mindset into the leadership culture.
In 2019, Sherman published “The Nurse Leader Coach: Become the Boss No One Wants to Leave,” building on lessons learned throughout her career. She also writes a popular blog that provides guidance for new and aspiring nurse leaders (www.emergingrnleader.com).
She is editor-in-chief of Nurse Leader, the official journal of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership. A prolific author, Sherman has published more than 90 articles and 11 book chapters on nursing leadership.
She holds degrees from the University of Florida, the Catholic University of America and Teachers College of Columbia University. She is an alumnus of the Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellowship Program.
