Newswise — NYU Lutheran Medical Center continues to advance cancer care in Brooklyn—and a talented new breast surgeon is helping to lead the way.
Board-certified and fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist Janet Yeh, MD, recently joined NYU Lutheran to expand breast cancer services and bring more high-quality, compassionate care to the community. One of Dr. Yeh’s principal goals is to make a concerted effort to get to know each and every patient and their particular circumstances.
“It’s important to take the time to get to know each patient to better understand their priorities when crafting a treatment plan,” says Dr. Yeh. “Breast oncology is an exciting field that is advancing at an incredible pace. While it can be very challenging, it is extremely rewarding in many ways.”
Dr. Yeh previously served as director of the breast center at Clara Maass Medical Center, a Barnabas Health-associated hospital in Belleville, NJ, before accepting the opportunity to join the staff at NYU Lutheran. She is working closely with senior leadership and a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and surgeons from NYU Lutheran and NYU Langone Medical Center to build an integrated, comprehensive breast center in Brooklyn that treats all patient needs, including malignant and benign breast disease.
“The Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone is a world leader in the care of patients with cancer,” says Dr. Yeh. “We now have the opportunity to bring those exact same resources and level of clinical excellence to the people in Brooklyn without them having to travel to Manhattan.”
NYU Lutheran, the central hub of the NYU Langone health system in Brooklyn, will have an expanded role in elevating the level of care available in the borough, and the breast service is an early example of that growth.
“We must think globally, but act locally,” says Alan Sickles, MD , who oversees the breast surgery program at NYU Lutheran as vice president and deputy executive hospital director. “We have a unique patient population here in Brooklyn. It is very ethnically diverse, and there are many uninsured or underinsured. Yet, no one should be denied world-class healthcare. NYU Lutheran Medical Center and the Family Health Centers help us to provide the care Brooklyn deserves,” he says.
In addition to specializing in the treatment of benign and malignant breast disease, Dr. Yeh also has an interest in high-risk individuals and their families as well as patient education, prevention, and early detection of breast cancer.
