Newswise — Pope Francis is making his first trip to the United States later this month. To document this historic visit, New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute is partnering with mobile publishing startup Evrybit for a collaborative mobile reporting project to provide live coverage of the event.
On Sept. 24 and 25 in New York City, NYU graduate and undergraduate journalism students will use Evrybit – an all-in-one app for live mobile storytelling – to chronicle the pope’s visit using audio, video, photo, text, and drawings. All of the content will be captured with Evrybit on iPhones by students from around the city and assembled into an interactive mobile narrative in real time. The Evrybit story will be embedded on NYU’s Pavement Pieces website – pavementpieces.com – and shared on social media with the hashtag #PopeNYUevrybit, allowing anyone to follow the live coverage from anywhere in the world.
“This is going to be an interesting and exciting project,” said Yvonne Latty, the director of the Reporting New York and Reporting the Nation programs at the Institute. “The idea is to fill the stream with as much content as we can throughout the pope's visit in New York City. We have about seven classes involved and up to 100 students will participate. We can handle and plan to try just about anything.”
NYU journalism students will post mobile content on the pope’s visit, which is scheduled to include appearances at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the 9/11 Memorial, the United Nations, and Madison Square Garden. NYU journalism faculty and Evrybit team members will monitor the coverage from locations in New York City and Los Angeles.
