As the nation’s political leaders feud over the replacement of late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, Dr. Dean Kotlowski, professor of history at Salisbury University, notes that American presidents have seen their share of controversy when it comes to Supreme Court nominees.

A presidential scholar who has written highly acclaimed books on Richard Nixon and 20th-century presidential hopeful Paul McNutt, Kotlowski has published on the controversy surrounding Nixon’s ultimately unsuccessful nomination of Clement Haynsworth Jr. in 1969. The partisan denial of Haynsworth’s seat on the high court’s bench sent shock waves throughout the political landscape that continued until the Reagan administration.

A Fulbright Scholar, Kotlowski has served as a guest speaker several times at the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum, and made multiple appearances on C-SPAN. He is available to discuss the current Supreme Court battle and its place in U.S. history with reporters by appointment on Tuesday, February 16. (Please note: Due to international Fulbright commitments, Kotlowski will not be available after February 16.)
