As the Patriots and Rams prepare for the Super Bowl, what's the science behind the movement of the football? Dr. Michael “Miki” Amitay, a professor of aerospace engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, can explain how and why the football moves through the air the way it does.

Amitay is the Director of the Center for Flow Physics and Control at Rensselaer, where he has led extensive research on flow using wind tunnels, and has developed flow control techniques and devices. He has also helped Bobsleigh and Skeleton athletes analyze and improve their performance using the wind tunnel.
