Researchers Identify Role of ‘Hunger Hormone’ in Body Weight, Fat and Blood Sugar Regulation

Study also suggests sex differences in obesity-related blood pressure control

Article title: "Impact of leptin deficiency compared with neuronal-specific leptin receptor deletion on cardiometabolic regulation"

Authors: Jussara M. do Carmo, Alexandre A. da Silva, Fabio N. Gava, Sydney P. Moak, Xuemei Dai, John E. Hall

From the authors: "Results indicate that although nervous system [leptin receptors (LRs)] play a crucial role in regulating body weight and glucose homeostasis, peripheral LRs regulate liver fat deposition. In addition, our results suggest potential sex differences in the impact of obesity on [blood pressure] regulation."

This study is highlighted as one of October’s “best of the best” as part of the American Physiological Society’s APSselect program.
