INTERNATIONAL CANCER CONFERENCE TO FEATURE REVIEW OF ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS BY MEDICAL ESTABLISHMENT

Focus on Newest Complementary and Alternative Cancer Studies at First-Ever Comprehensive Cancer Conference June 12-14, Arlington, Virginia

June 11, 1998, WASHINGTON, DC - Can garlic help battle cancer? What about Maitake mushrooms...or soy? For the first time, oncologists and researchers will be analyzing data involving garlic, soy, mushrooms, Coenzyme Q-10, support groups, vegetarian diets, acupuncture, and other alternative treatments.

More than 800 medical practitioners and interested public from around the world will gather for the first-ever integrative cancer conference. Jointly sponsored by NIH's Office of Alternative Medicine and the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Mind-Body Medicine, the conference, Comprehensive Cancer Care: Integrating Complementary and Alternative Therapies, is attracting notable physicians and researchers as well as the concerned public.

Featured speakers include: David S. Rosenthal, MD, President of the American Cancer Society; William Fair, MD, Chief of Urologic Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital; Nicholas Gonzalez, MD, an immunologist who uses nutritional and enzymatic therapies to treat advanced cancer; Alison Estabrook, MD, Chief of The Breast Service, St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital; Chungui Huang, MD, Director of China's Yunan Tumor Institute; and Senator Tom Harkin whose legislation established NIH's Office of Alternative Medicine.

More than one hundred notable researchers, oncologists and other health care professionals, and members of Congress will be speaking or participating in this breakthrough conference.

James S. Gordon, MD, Harvard-trained Clinical professor of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at the Georgetown University School of Medicine and Founder and Director of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, is seeing interest on every level.

Dr. Gordon says, "The best and the brightest of the cancer community are coming together to analyze data on complementary and alternative therapies and discuss how these therapies can be used in conjunction with conventional treatment. Dr. Gordon was the First Chair of the Advisory Council to NIH's Office of Alternative Medicine and the author of Manifesto for a New Medicine: Your Guide to healing Partnerships and the Wise Use of Alternative Therapies.
