Newswise — The words ‘no evidence of disease’ sound like the most beautiful music to people with cancer. It means the cancer no longer poses a threat to their health and happiness – and that the treatment they’ve undergone is helping their body keep the cancer at bay.
So naturally, a band of musicians – who also happen to be gynecological cancer doctors – chose it as their name. And their music strikes chords with anyone affected by cancer.
No Evidence of Disease (N.E.D.) started as a cover band at a Society of Gynecologic Oncology conference. The six band members soon evolved from covering other artists to writing their own music. When they played at other SGO events, though, they realized the power of music not only to heal but also to bring awareness.
These days, N.E.D. plays at venues around the country. Their first visit to the American Southwest will be November 9, with their stop in Albuquerque to play at Popejoy Hall.
“This concert fits beautifully with our Southwest culture,” says Carolyn Muller, MD. “Art and music are healing, and our culture embeds that idea.”
Muller, a gynecologic oncologist and a guitarist, leads the Women’s Cancers program at The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center. She says that music not only heals people with cancer, but also heals their doctors.
“We try to be as good as we can be for our patients,” Muller says. “We, too, have to heal from issues and losses that we experience through our patients.”
For Amy Gundelach, MSN, RN, the concert will help to bring awareness of women’s and other cancers to New Mexico. Gundelach, who works with Muller at UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, founded and directs the Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Project, which provides education and support to women facing gynecologic and breast cancers. “N.E.D.’s whole purpose is creating awareness,” Gundelach says.
Indeed, N.E.D. plays to empower people and give them hope. The songs they write and play are inspired by the band members’ patients. And though they live and treat women in five different states, they make time to play together for everyone living with cancer.

An afternoon panel discussion with N.E.D. band members, Carolyn Muller, MD, and Amy Gundelach will take place Nov. 9, 2018, from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the UNM Cancer Center Auditorium, 1201 Camino de Salud NE, Albuquerque.
