Rutgers economist Bill Rodgers is available to discuss the September jobs report from the U.S. Labor Department to be released Friday, Oct. 2.
“This Friday's report is the last major reading on the labor market before voters head to the polls on November 3rd,” said Rodgers. “The report will have a bit for each candidate. It will show that the jobs market continues to recover, probably 800,000 to one million new jobs. But it will still show a major jobs deficit -- that a major gap remains between where jobs are today versus prior to the pandemic. Non-trivial headwinds, such as uncertainty about the election, abating recovery and relief supports and recent upward spikes in COVID-19 positivity rates in over 20 states, could lead to a weaker payroll estimate.”
Rodgers is the chief economist at the Rutgers Heldrich Center for Workforce Development and former chief economist at the U.S. Department of Labor.
