New Brunswick, N.J. (Dec. 3, 2019) – T. Patrick Hill, a Rutgers-New Brunswick professor of ethics and law, is available to discuss New York state legislation that would require the vaccination for HPV for children before attending school. Two bills are being considered by the state and are up for the January 2020 vote.
"As an amendment to existing public health law, that the vaccination is required poses ethical questions, not the least of which is the suspension of parental medical decision-making for their children in favor of the interests of the public's health. While both the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention insist on the safety of the vaccine, there is evidence of side effects of the vaccine not yet well studied due to lack of their clearer definition. If so, there should be a provision in the legislation ensuring monitoring for and reporting of these side effects."
