Henry F. Raymond, an epidemiologist and associate professor at the Rutgers School of Public Health, is available to discuss New Jersey’s decision to allow gyms and indoor dining to open at 25% capacity starting this week.

“People using gyms or going to restaurants need to take precautions like wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, disinfecting gym equipment and washing their hands frequently and thoroughly,” he says. “Gym operators and restaurant owners will likely need to follow state requirements, which are likely to include, but are not limited to, temperature checks and checking in and out. It is especially important that people do not go to public places, especially indoors, if they are feeling sick or have been in close contact with someone who is sick.

“While distancing, smaller class sizes and cleaning help, indoor group exercise is still highly risky. Solo exercise is still preferable.”
