Rutgers medical experts are available to discuss the FDA’s approval of Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine for emergency use and its rollout.
The Rutgers New Jersey Medical School is one of only two sites for the Phase 3 trial of the Moderna vaccine in New Jersey.
“This approval is an exciting step in expanding access to safe and effective vaccines to people who desperately need them and provides hope that the end of this pandemic is near,” said Shobha Swaminathan, an associate professor, principal investigator for the Moderna Phase 3 trial at Rutgers NJMS and medical director of the infectious disease practice at University Hospital.
“I, along with the rest of the health care community, am optimistic about the FDA’s emergency use authorization of the Moderna vaccine along with the ongoing distribution of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, both of which have been shown to have high efficacy and safety,” said Brian Strom, chancellor of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences and the executive vice president for Health Affairs at Rutgers University. “We enthusiastically celebrate this enormous advancement and urge people to accept the vaccine when it is their turn to get it. However, it is also critical to continue to be vigilant and patient. As states move forward with vaccine distribution, we must continue to observe recommended CDC and state and local public health guidelines, and to stay home if unwell or isolate if you have been around someone who has tested positive for the coronavirus.”
“It’s been a tremendous success to get another safe and effective vaccine available in the next vaccination process for vulnerable populations, and I urge the general public to take it when it becomes widely available to help save lives,” said Reynold Panettieri, a professor at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and director of the Rutgers Institute for Translational Medicine and Science.
